The Women of St. Luke's

The object and purpose of the Women of St. Luke’s is to bring together the women of the church into a united effort of service through the parish, community, diocese, nation, and the world for the extension of God’s kingdom.

All women members of St. Luke’s Church are members of the Women of St. Luke’s. We serve through hospitality and community outreach. Each year we host two events featuring timely and enriching speakers, a Christmas Tea, and an annual meeting in May. We organize receptions to welcome newly baptized and confirmed parishioners. We take meals to members of our parish who are in need of pastoral care. We collect the United Thank Offering and keep the Book of Remembrance.

The Women of St. Luke’s operate the Green Door Thrift Shop(826.7111, 1030 Nacogdoches Road). For over fifty years, this project has collected usable clothing and housewares, which are then offered for sale at affordable prices. Each year the Women of St. Luke’s allocate the proceeds from the Green Door to various community, Diocesan, and worldwide charities, as well as to the budget of St. Luke’s Church.

Past beneficiaries of the Christian Giving Fund include St. Luke’s Church and School, the Good Samaritan Center, Camp Capers Scholarship, San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries, Family Violence Prevention Center, N.E. S.A. Outreach, Bexar County Detention Ministries, Morningside Ministries, Women at the Well, Christian Assistance Ministry, VNA/Hospice South Texas, Diocese of West Texas/Habitat for Humanity, Texas Water Project (formerly Honduras Water Ministry, projects in Uganda, Mercy Ships-Africa, and most recently Hurricane Katrina relief.

In 2005, the Women revived the Green Door Style Show, in which parishioners modeled clothing from the Green Door at the May Luncheon.
